1/5/2006: The 700 Idiotic Comments Club

Pat Roberton's done it again. He told his "700 Club" viewers that Ariel Sharon's stroke was God's punishment for having withdrawn from Gaza and "dividing God's land."

This is the same guy who told the residents of Dover, PA in November "If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God" after school board members who advocated teaching creationism were fired.

In August he said America should assassinate Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela.

I don't much care what Mr. Robertson's beliefs are, or anyone else's for that matter, but when someone sets themself up as a "spiritual leader" and "man of God" and then spews this kind of hateful speech and preaches death wishes to people who are (apparently) naive enough to buy whatever he says just because he says it, then I have a problem.

I guess endless war and bloodshed in Israel is preferable to a possible peaceful settlement in Robertson's view. Along with saying God was punishing Mr. Sharon, he also said that he had prayed with him last year and called him "a good friend" but kept up his divine retribution theme by saying "our spiritual actions have consequences." If there's any cosmic justice at all, spiritual or secular, then this nasty little man will eventually get what's coming to him, one way or another.

Pat Robertson is the poster boy for the saying "Jesus, protect me from your followers."
